Calibrate controller sticks after module replacement

Replacing analog stick modules with Hall effect or TMR sensors eliminates potentiometer wear, but newly installed modules almost never sit on exact factory centre. Hardware trim-pot alignment must precede software calibration. Here is the correct post-repair procedure.

Why newly installed stick modules drift out of the box

When you solder in a new potentiometer or magnetic Hall effect stick module, microscopic assembly tolerances and solder tension alter the neutral mechanical resting position. The controller still references the calibration offsets of the previous module.

Skipping physical alignment is the primary cause of reports that "Hall effect sticks made drift worse." If a magnetic module rests with more than 10% raw offset, software calibration cannot cleanly bridge the gap without sacrificing dynamic range.

Correct installation and calibration sequence

Follow this sequence after soldering or fitting replacement modules.

  1. 1

    Solder the replacement module securely

Ensure all ground and signal pins are cleanly wetted with no solder bridges or loose joints.

  2. 2

Mechanically adjust trim pots before closing the shell

Plug the open board into a PC and inspect resting coordinates in DriftNo. Adjust physical trim pots or magnetic calibration holes until raw drift is under 5% (the pass threshold in DriftNo).

  3. 3

    Reassemble the controller housing

Fasten the shell screws and snap faceplates in place. Squeezing the housing can slightly shift internal tolerances, so assemble before software calibration.

  4. 4

    Run centre calibration over USB

Place the assembled controller flat and write the neutral centre offset to on-board NVS memory.

  5. 5

Run range calibration with smooth sweeps

Rotate the sticks around the physical plastic boundaries to map the full outer circularity.

  6. 6

Verify Before / After in the Lab

Check the Controller Health Score and confirm that circularity error is under 7% (the passing threshold in DriftNo) with zero resting drift.

Calibration writes over USB are available for PlayStation controllers. Xbox and Nintendo pads use software preview.

FAQ

Why do my new Hall effect sticks register 15% drift right after soldering?

Hall effect sticks rely on magnets positioned over sensor ICs. Until you adjust the integrated trim potentiometers or run software calibration, the default magnetic offset will show as drift.

Should I calibrate before or after assembling the plastic shell?

Adjust hardware trim pots while open, but always run your final software calibration after the controller is fully assembled, as the plastic faceplate ring defines the outer boundary.

I fitted Hall effect sticks. Do I still need to calibrate?

Yes, and it matters more than people expect. New modules rarely land on the exact centre and range the controller expects, so a freshly repaired pad can still read off-centre until it is calibrated. Run a scan, calibrate centre and range, then re-test to confirm the repair.

Does DriftNo fix stick drift permanently?

It depends on the cause. If the stick rests off-centre but is otherwise stable, calibration can correct it and the correction holds. If the potentiometer is worn (scratchy, jumpy, drift that comes back within minutes) no software can repair that. DriftNo tells you which case you are in instead of guessing.

Verify your new stick modules

Connect your repaired controller and run the diagnostic check to ensure zero drift.
