DualShock 4: stick drift test and fix

DualShock 4 pads are old enough now that most drift complaints are genuine wear rather than a calibration slip. DriftNo exists to tell those two cases apart before you spend money: scan first, read the severity band, then decide between calibrating and replacing the module.

What to expect with the DualShock 4

How DriftNo treats this pad for DualShock 4 stick drift: what you can test in a browser, what can be written to the controller, and when a repair is the honest answer.

In practice

When the sticks are still stable, the USB calibration path works the same way it does on a DualSense - corrected centre and range are written to the controller and stay there.

Key points

  • Two hardware revisions exist; DriftNo matches both and reports which one it sees.
  • Worn pots are the most common cause of drift on this generation of pad.
  • Calibration over USB is free and needs no disassembly.

DualShock 4 stick drift: common questions

Is it worth calibrating a very old DualShock 4?

Run the scan and let the numbers decide. If the resting reading is stable and merely off-centre, calibration is worth it. If the reading jumps around while your hands are off the pad, a stick module replacement is the honest answer.

Does the fix stay on the controller when I unplug it?

Centre and range calibration written over USB is stored on the controller, so it travels with the pad when you move it to your console. Deadzone and curve tuning is browser-side and does not.

Can DriftNo fix a DualShock 4 that drifts in one direction constantly?

A consistent single-direction drift at rest is the classic centre offset case, and it is the one calibration handles best. Run Quick Fix and compare the Before/After reading to confirm.

How do I know whether to calibrate or replace the stick?

Run the scan first. Stable readings with an off-centre rest point point to calibration. Noisy, inconsistent readings, or drift that returns shortly after a fix, point to a worn module - replace it, then calibrate the new one.

Same platform family or common upgrade path from the DualShock 4.
