Calibration greyed out or blocked: how to unlock
When stick calibration controls appear greyed out or unclickable, the browser cannot obtain exclusive write access to the controller. Hardware calibration on web requires a direct USB connection, a Chromium browser, and no background software capturing the device. Here is how to unlock controls.
Why calibration buttons appear greyed out
Browser tools communicate with PlayStation controllers through WebHID feature reports. If the browser cannot establish low-level write access, calibration controls are intentionally disabled to prevent incomplete data transmission.
The three most frequent causes of greyed-out calibration controls are connecting over wireless Bluetooth, using an unsupported browser engine like Safari or Firefox, or having background software like Steam or DS4Windows holding an exclusive lock on the controller.
Why calibration controls are greyed out or blocked
| Connection / Setup | Status in browser | Why write is blocked | How to resolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth wireless connection | Disabled | Bluetooth HID stack blocks vendor feature reports | Connect using a USB data cable |
| Charge-only USB cable | Undetected | Cable lacks data wires (D+/D-) for USB transfer | Use a verified USB data cable |
| Safari / Firefox browser | Unsupported | Browser engine does not implement WebHID API | Switch to Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Opera |
| Steam running in background | Greyed out / locked | Steam Input holds an exclusive device handle | Exit Steam completely from system tray |
| DS4Windows / reWASD active | Greyed out / emulated | Remapper hooks the pad as an emulated Xbox device | Close mapping apps before launching DriftNo |
| Xbox or Switch pad on web | Software test only | Hardware protocols do not support WebHID flash writes | Use platform apps or DriftNo software deadzones |
Checklist to unlock calibration controls
Work through these checks in order to enable calibration writes.
- 1
Close background controller software
Exit Steam, DS4Windows, reWASD, and BetterJoy from your system tray. These utilities intercept controller handles and prevent raw WebHID access.
- 2
Connect with a USB data cable
Disconnect Bluetooth. Connect directly to a USB port on your PC using a known data-capable USB cable.
- 3
Use Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Opera
Open DriftNo in a supported Chromium desktop browser. Safari, Firefox, and mobile browsers do not support WebHID.
- 4
Grant WebHID permissions in the browser prompt
When clicking Connect, select the Wireless Controller from the native browser popup and click Connect to grant write permissions.
- 5
Keep controller firmware updated
If using DualSense on PC, ensure your firmware is current using the official PlayStation Accessories app on Windows.

FAQ
Does updating controller firmware fix stick drift by itself?
No. Firmware updates improve stability and communication protocols, but they do not eliminate physical stick drift. Once updated, you can use calibration to correct resting offsets.
Can I update DualSense firmware without a PS5 console?
Yes. Sony provides an official PC application named "PlayStation Accessories" (formerly Firmware updater for DualSense) that runs on Windows 10 and 11 over USB.
Which browsers and devices work?
Chrome, Edge or Opera on a desktop or laptop. Calibration writes use WebHID, which needs a USB connection on most controllers. Firefox and Safari do not support WebHID, and phone browsers cannot run the tool at all.
